# Acts 19:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books and burned them in front of everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower cites Acts 19:19 — the Ephesian converts publicly burning their magic-arts books — as a blanket precedent for destroying any religious image, artefact, or Christian symbol in one's possession. Reasoning From the Scriptures (pp. 183-187) couples it with Deuteronomy 7:25-26 to argue that Christians today must not own a cross, a nativity scene, an illustration of Jesus, or any representational Christian art.

## Protestant Usage

The Ephesian convert story draws a specific line. What they burned were *their own books of magical arts* — working material for their former occupation as practitioners of Artemis-sorcery. Not a piece of art. Not a historical illustration. Not a memorial cross. The items were tools of a devotional practice the converts were leaving behind. Compare the bronze serpent in Numbers 21:8 — commanded by Jehovah himself, preserved for seven hundred years as a memorial, and destroyed only at 2 Kings 18:4 when the people began burning incense to it. Same object, righteous for centuries, removed only when it became cultic. The Watchtower's own *Insight on the Scriptures* ("Copper Serpent" entry) concedes that Hezekiah destroyed it "because the people had made an idol of it." Use, not matter. Acts 19:19 fits that pattern exactly — the occult manuals went into the fire because they were being used. A cross on a wall that nobody bows to does not fit the pattern.
