In practice, members are taught that "examining the Scriptures" must be filtered through the faithful and discreet slave; independent Bible reading apart from Watchtower literature is presented as a doorway to apostasy. ## Protestant Usage The Bereans were called "noble" precisely for testing an apostle's teaching against Scripture — and Paul accepted that test without rebuke. If checking a genuinely inspired apostle is noble, checking the Governing Body (which the Watchtower itself describes as "neither inspired nor infallible") cannot be ignoble.
