JW Usage

Peter's words to Cornelius, "God raised this one up on the third day," are one of the texts the Watchtower cites to show that Jehovah alone resurrected Jesus. The reasoning runs that the apostles always say Jesus "was raised" or that God raised him, never that he raised himself, so Jesus' own statement in ("I will raise it up") must be figurative or mean only that he received life back from his Father.

Christians affirm without reservation. The Father is God, and the Father raised the Son (). The verse says who raised Jesus; it does not say Jesus had no part in it, and it cannot overrule what Jesus himself said. shows that after the resurrection the disciples "recalled that he used to say this" and "believed the scripture and what Jesus had spoken," and what he had spoken was "I will raise it up." Jesus says the same in . The apostolic preaching that "God raised him" and Jesus' claim to raise himself are both part of the one apostolic witness, and the New Testament also links the Spirit to the resurrection (). One resurrection, attributed to the Father, the Son and the Spirit, is what we would expect if the one God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
