# 2 Timothy 3:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

## JW Usage

JWs accept 2 Tim 3:16 ("All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness") as a foundational text on inspiration and quote it constantly in their literature. The Watchtower owns the Bible's authority in principle while in practice subordinating Scripture to the Governing Body's interpretation through the "faithful and discreet slave" doctrine. The classic formulation is from Watchtower 1 December 1981 p. 27: "unless we are in touch with this channel of communication that God is using, we will not progress along the road to life, no matter how much Bible reading we do." 2 Tim 3:16 is therefore handled at meetings with pre-printed questions and approved paragraph answers, the Bible is read through Watchtower publications rather than the other way around, and any independent reading that arrives at conclusions different from current "spiritual food" is treated as the kind of "independent thinking" Satan uses to draw members away. The Governing Body itself is on record as "neither inspired nor infallible" (Watchtower February 2017 p. 26) — yet contradicting them is treated as contradicting Jehovah.

## Protestant Usage

2 Tim 3:16 is one of the cleanest sola-scriptura texts in the New Testament because the NWT itself renders v17 in stronger terms than many Protestant translations: "so that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." Three things follow that the Watchtower's organisational-channel doctrine cannot absorb. (1) Sufficiency. The Greek words artios ("fully competent") and exērtismenos ("completely equipped") are absolute. There is no remainder for an additional channel to fill. If Scripture alone makes the man of God complete, the 1981 Watchtower's "no matter how much Bible reading we do" claim is a direct contradiction of Paul's inspired statement. The NWT preserves the contradiction intact. (2) Source. Paul says the Scriptures are theopneustos — God-breathed — and on that ground claims their sufficiency. The Governing Body, by its own admission, is "neither inspired nor infallible." Whatever authority the GB has, it is categorically lower than what 2 Tim 3:16 attributes to Scripture. The Watchtower cannot maintain "we are not inspired" and "you cannot understand the Bible without us" without conceding that the uninspired intermediary somehow trumps the inspired source. (3) Practice. The Bereans of Acts 17:11 (the verse the Watchtower itself praises) tested Paul — an actual apostle with miraculous credentials — against Scripture, and were called "more noble-minded" for doing so. By the Watchtower's own logic the same Berean test must be permitted against the Governing Body. In practice it is not: a member whose personal Bible study leads to a conclusion different from current Watchtower teaching faces judicial committee proceedings. 1 Cor 4:6 (NWT: "do not go beyond the things that are written") is the same rule running in parallel — Watchtower-specific commands like the blood-fraction policy, hours-reporting, the two-witness rule for abuse, the prohibition on independent Bible study groups, and the ever-shifting "this generation" framework all go beyond what is written. Matthew 15:9 ("It is in vain that they keep worshipping me, for they teach commands of men as doctrines") is Jesus' diagnosis of the same pattern in the Pharisees. The verse the Watchtower needs to underwrite its authority is precisely the verse that, read in context, removes the warrant for that authority.
