# 2 Timothy 3:12

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

## JW Usage

JWs invoke 2 Timothy 3:12 ("all those desiring to live with godly devotion in association with Christ Jesus will also be persecuted") to interpret opposition as confirmation of doctrine. The April 2017 Russian Supreme Court ruling banning Jehovah's Witnesses as "extremist" is treated as a textbook fulfilment: believers are arrested, homes raided, property seized — exactly what Paul said would happen to those living in godly devotion. On this reading, the persecution itself validates the Watchtower's claim to be the true organisation.

## Protestant Usage

Start with solidarity. The Russian ban is a genuine religious- freedom violation, and it should be openly condemned — condemned by name, with reference to USCIRF, Forum 18, and the European Court of Human Rights. A Witness facing a Russian cell deserves prayer and advocacy regardless of what the conversation about scripture concludes. That comes first.
Then, gently, the logical correction. 2 Timothy 3:12 says persecution *will* come to those in godly devotion — not that persecution is the exclusive mark of the one true group. The same logic, consistently applied, would validate Mormons (driven from state to state in nineteenth-century America), Scientologists (suppressed in Germany and France), Falun Gong (tortured in China), North Korean underground Christians, Iranian converts from Islam, and Nigerian believers under Boko Haram. All of them are persecuted; they cannot all be the one true religion. The test for doctrine is what the Bereans did in Acts 17:11 — examine the scriptures, not the headlines.

- [Russia's 2017 Ban on Jehovah's Witnesses — Condemn the Persecution, Reject the Non-Sequitur](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/russia-ban-witnesses-2017.md) — Persecution is real and evil; it is not a proof of doctrine [Authority]
