# 2 Timothy 1:13

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching you have heard from me, with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower cites 2 Timothy 1:13 ("Keep holding the pattern of healthful words that you heard from me") to support the idea that doctrinal direction must flow from an authorised channel in each generation. On this reading, Paul is handing Timothy a body of teaching which Timothy must preserve intact and transmit through a faithful succession — and today that successor function is the Governing Body guarding the "pattern of healthful words" against doctrinal drift.

## Protestant Usage

Look carefully at what Paul actually hands over. The "pattern" is the content of apostolic teaching — what Paul himself preached and wrote. It is not an office, not a charism, not a succession of living spokesmen. Two chapters later Paul is explicit about where that pattern is preserved: "the holy writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation" (2 Timothy 3:15, NWT). The pattern is fixed, written, and delivered. Timothy's job is to guard *what was delivered*, not to expand it.
Paul himself sets the test: Galatians 1:8 — "even if we or an angel from heaven should declare to you as good news something beyond the good news we declared to you, let him be accursed." Paul's rule is that any later message which differs from the original apostolic pattern is anathema, no matter who delivers it. The reversals on 1914, the generation, Romans 13, and the identity of the faithful slave are each later messages that differed from earlier Watchtower teaching. Paul's own falsifiability test applies.
