2 Thessalonians 2:3
2 Thessalonians 2:33Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed.
JWs read — "the apostasy comes first" — as predicting a total departure from true Christianity after the apostles died. This "great apostasy" corrupted the church with pagan doctrines (the Trinity, immortal soul, hellfire) until Charles Taze Russell restored original first-century truth in the 1870s. The verse anchors the Watchtower's claim to be a restoration movement, not a nineteenth-century invention.
The JW apostasy narrative collapses under historical inquiry. Nine pre-Nicaean church fathers — including men personally taught by apostles — affirmed Christ's deity: Ignatius (taught by John) called Jesus "our God"; Polycarp (also taught by John) wrote "our Lord and God Jesus Christ"; the chain John → Polycarp → Irenaeus → Hippolytus is traceable. No room exists for total apostasy between the apostles and these men. The Watchtower's own internal research for the Proclaimers book tried to identify predecessor groups (Paulicians, Waldenses, Socinians) — not a single group met even four basic JW doctrinal criteria. Russell himself acknowledged his sources: "I confess indebtedness to Adventists." Meanwhile, defines the antichrist spirit as denying "Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh" — and in the NWT ends: "This is the true God and life everlasting." The Watchtower's own antichrist boomerang catches its Christology in its own net.
