2 Peter 3:9

NT Letters
2 Peter 3:9
9The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.

JW Usage

JWs cite — "Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise ... but he is patient with you because he does not desire any to be destroyed" — to explain why Armageddon has not yet come. God is giving people time to learn about him and join his organisation. However, the Watchtower's Armageddon doctrine teaches that only Jehovah's Witnesses have any scriptural hope of surviving — all others face destruction without resurrection.

Protestant Usage

Second Peter 3:9 in the NWT says Jehovah "does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance." This sits in profound tension with the Watchtower's Armageddon doctrine: 8.8 million Jehovah's Witnesses out of 8.1 billion people means more than ninety-nine per cent of currently living humans face destruction without resurrection. Revelation 19 names those destroyed — the beast, the false prophet, and armies gathered to wage war against Christ — not "all non-JWs." The Watchtower's alternative-service reversal illustrates the human cost of Governing Body authority: for nearly twenty years after the Governing Body itself voted 11-5 to allow civilian service, young men continued going to prison because the vote fell short of a two-thirds majority. When the policy finally reversed in 1996, there was no apology. Jesus in specifically addressed state-compelled civilian service and told followers to comply and go beyond — not refuse.
