# 2 Peter 1:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

## JW Usage

The NWT renders this verse as "our God and [the] Saviour Jesus Christ," inserting a bracketed "[the]" to split "God" and "Saviour" into two persons — Jehovah and Jesus. This supports the JW reading that Jesus is the Saviour but not God.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek follows the Granville Sharp construction: one article (tou) governs both nouns (theou and sōtēros) joined by kai, with no second article before "Saviour." Greek grammar identifies "God" and "Saviour" as the same person — Jesus Christ. The same construction appears in Titus 2:13 ("our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ"). The NWT's own rendering of 2 Peter 1:11 uses the identical Granville Sharp construction and correctly renders it as one person ("our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ") — exposing the inconsistency at 1:1. No modern translation agrees with the NWT's two-person split. This is a grammatical argument, not a theological one — about how Greek works, not about what we want the text to say. The NWT's divergence here is classified as high severity in interlinear analysis because it contradicts its own translation principles applied eleven verses later.

## NWT Issue

The NWT inserts a bracketed article "[the]" before "Saviour" to create two persons ("our God and [the] Saviour Jesus Christ"), violating the Granville Sharp rule where one article governs both nouns. The NWT's own rendering of the identical construction in 2 Peter 1:11 correctly treats it as one person ("our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ"), exposing internal inconsistency. No modern translation agrees with the NWT's two-person split at 1:1.
