# 2 Kings 2:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire with horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind.

## JW Usage

The rs book uses 2 Kings 2:11 as a foundation text for the Watchtower's denial of any pre-Christian bodily translation to heaven. The NWT renders the verse "Elijah went up in the windstorm to the heavens" — and the Watchtower argues that this "heavens" (Hebrew *shamayim*) refers to the atmospheric heavens where the birds fly, not to the heavenly realm where Jehovah dwells. John 3:13 ("no one has ascended into heaven") is then invoked as a universal denial that any human except Jesus has gone to heaven proper.

## Protestant Usage

Two decisive moves. First, Hebrews 11:5 forces canonical harmony back to the traditional reading. The NWT renders Hebrews 11:5 unambiguously: "By faith Enoch was transferred so as not to see death, and he was not to be found because God had transferred him." "Did not see death" is the text's own wording. If Enoch were merely relocated on earth, he would have died normally and Hebrews 11:5 would be false. The verse excludes the atmospheric-transport reading entirely. And the same Hebrew verb *laqach* ("took") is used for both Enoch in Genesis 5:24 and Elijah in 2 Kings 2:3, 9, 10 — the lexical link is deliberate.
Second, Acts 1:11 closes the return-of-Christ implication. Two angels, standing with the apostles, say Jesus "will come in the same manner as you have seen him going into the sky" — visibly, bodily, with a cloud, witnessed. Revelation 1:7 in the NWT confirms: "every eye will see him, and those who pierced him." The Watchtower's invisible-parousia doctrine of 1914 rests partly on reading 2 Kings 2:11 as non-heavenly. But Enoch refutes the atmospheric reading, and the angels refute the invisible-return application. The Watchtower's system has to correct Hebrews 11:5 *and* the two angels of Acts 1 to make the reading work.
