2 John 1:4
2 John 1:44I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us.
"Walking in the truth" is heard through the organisation's own vocabulary, in which "the Truth" names the body of Watchtower teaching and association with the organisation. On that reading John is commending children who have remained within God's arrangement.
This is a vocabulary observation, offered as a question rather than a correction. John says he found children walking in the truth "just as we received commandment from the Father." The truth here is something a person walks in and something received as a commandment — a way of living according to a message, not membership of a body. Collect the New Testament's uses and the pattern is clear. Jesus says "I am the truth" (). The Spirit is the Spirit of truth (). And the truth is the gospel message — the word of the truth, the good news (); the truth of the good news (, 2:14). A person, the Spirit, and a message. Never an institution. So when a Witness says they came into the Truth, or that a relative left it, ask what the word means in these verses. Most have never noticed that their usage has no parallel in the New Testament, and the noticing does more than an argument would. Compare , , .
