# 2 Corinthians 5:10

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.

## JW Usage

JWs cite 2 Corinthians 5:10 — "we must all appear before the judgment seat" — as evidence that final salvation depends on continued obedience and a lifetime of works. The judgment seat is read as a future evaluation where one's record of organisational faithfulness determines the outcome. Nobody can claim to be saved until Jehovah renders his final verdict.

## Protestant Usage

Second Corinthians 5:10 teaches that believers will give account at the judgment seat of Christ. But the broader context of Paul's letters establishes that these are people already justified (Romans 5:1), already free from condemnation (Romans 8:1), and already secure (Romans 8:33-34). Romans 5:9 provides Paul's own logic: "since we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath." If God has done the hard part (declaring sinners righteous), the easy part (bringing them home) is guaranteed. The judgment seat evaluates how believers lived — not whether they belong. First Corinthians 3:15 makes this explicit: a believer whose work is burned up "will be saved, yet as through fire." Salvation is settled; what is evaluated is the fruit. Works are evidence of living faith, not an independent ingredient added to justification.
