# 2 Corinthians 5:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower teaches "soul sleep" — death is unconsciousness until the resurrection. There is no intermediate state of conscious existence between bodily death and bodily resurrection. 2 Corinthians 5:1 ("if our earthly house, this tent, should be dissolved, we are to have a building from God, a house not made with hands, everlasting in the heavens") is read as a description of the future resurrection body — bypassing entirely any claim of conscious existence between the two states.

## Protestant Usage

Paul distinguishes *three* states in 2 Corinthians 5:1-4, not two. (a) In this tent — alive in the present earthly body. (b) Unclothed — between death and resurrection, without a body. (c) Clothed with the heavenly dwelling — the resurrection body. Paul says of state (b) that he would rather not be "unclothed," but he is clear that state (b) exists as something distinct from both (a) and (c). And verse 8 specifies what state (b) feels like: "to be absent from the body and to make our home with the Lord."
The logical force is decisive. In Philippians 1:23, Paul says he desires "the releasing and the being with Christ, for this, to be sure, is far better" than fruitful ministry. If "the releasing" just means unconsciousness until resurrection, dying is not "far better" than anything — it is nothing. You do not prefer nothing over fruitful service. The intermediate state is conscious, with Christ, awaiting the resurrection body — which is exactly what Jesus promised the thief in Luke 23:43: "today you will be with me in paradise." Not at the resurrection — today.
