2 Corinthians 12:12
2 Corinthians 12:1212The true marks of an apostle—signs, wonders, and miracles—were performed among you with great perseverance.
JWs acknowledge the "signs of an apostle" but do not apply the criterion to the Governing Body's authority claim. The 1919 inspection narrative — Jesus invisibly inspected all professed Christians and appointed the Bible Students as the "faithful and discreet slave" — rests on no verifiable evidence. The Governing Body does not claim to perform apostolic signs, yet claims apostolic- level authority over doctrine and practice for millions of Witnesses worldwide.
Second Corinthians 12:12 identifies specific marks of apostleship: "signs and wonders and powerful works." These marks, combined with eyewitness testimony of the risen Christ (, ) and the authority to deliver new revelation (), define a non-transferable office. The Governing Body neither possesses nor claims any of these marks — it explicitly admits it is "neither inspired nor infallible." The 1919 inspection claim is unfalsifiable: no conceivable evidence could disprove an invisible event witnessed by no one. In 1919 the Bible Students were celebrating Christmas, wearing cross-and-crown emblems, practising pyramidology, and teaching Jesus' presence began in 1874. By Jesus' own fruit test (), the fruits of 1919 do not support an appointment claim. The apostles' foundation was laid once (); it is not re-poured every generation.
