# 2 Corinthians 1:22

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

## JW Usage

Witnesses tend to treat 2 Corinthians 1:22 ("he has put his seal on us and has given us the token of what is to come, that is, the spirit, in our hearts") as applying uniquely to the anointed 144,000 — the ones sealed as heavenly class. The "great crowd" of other sheep, on this reading, receive no such seal and no such Spirit-indwelling; their hope is earthly paradise under millennial Kingdom rule, not the present possession of the Spirit as deposit.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's "token" (Greek *arrabōn* — downpayment, guarantee) is a decisive text against deferring all transformation and Spirit- blessing to a future millennium. The New Testament pattern is inaugurated eschatology: the age to come has broken into the present. Romans 8:23 pairs with this — "we who have the firstfruits of the spirit" — and Jesus himself applies Isaiah 35:5-6 to his own ministry in Matthew 11:4-5, saying the prophecy is being fulfilled in present tense.
The gentle question: "If the Spirit is given as a downpayment that guarantees the full future inheritance, and Paul says 'us' — not 'us anointed only' — when did the Spirit become something you no longer possess? 2 Corinthians 1:22 says the seal and deposit are for the people Paul is writing to. Romans 8:9 adds that whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ." That is not a trivia question — it is the whole gospel.
