# 1 Timothy 3:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "This statement is trustworthy: If a man is reaching out to be an overseer, he is desirous of a fine work."

## JW Usage

JWs cite this verse to affirm the seriousness of the elder/overseer office and the spiritual ambition of brothers reaching out for it. Watchtower study material on overseers regularly uses 1 Timothy 3 to describe the qualifications expected of appointed brothers in the congregation.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's affirmation that desiring overseership is "a fine work" is the opening of the longer qualifications list (verses 2-7) — above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money, managing his own household well, of good reputation with outsiders. The doorstep use of this verse is in conjunction with James 3:1 ("not many of you should become teachers, knowing that we will receive stricter judgment") and Matthew 5:33-37 (let your yes be yes). When a body of overseers makes claims under oath in court that contradict claims made in print to members — as in the 14 August 2015 Royal Commission testimony where the Governing Body was described as not being God's spokespeople, while published Watchtower material has called the faithful and discreet slave the channel of communication for decades — the qualifications of 1 Timothy 3 raise a serious question. The office Paul describes is held to a teaching standard that requires consistency between what is said publicly and what is taught privately. The doorstep insight is gentle: this is not about individual brothers serving in local congregations; it is about the teaching office's accountability when its public and internal voices diverge.
