# 1 Peter 5:8

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Keep your senses, be watchful! Your adversary, the Devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking to devour someone."

## JW Usage

JWs cite "the Devil walks about like a roaring lion" as scriptural support for vigilance against satanic influence — particularly the influence Satan exerts over "the world" outside the organisation (apostates, worldly entertainment, higher education, doubts about Watchtower teaching). The verse is often paired with the framing that Satan is behind every doubt or external influence, an application that effectively grants Satan functional ubiquity.

## Protestant Usage

Peter's image is decisive on what Satan is and is not. "Walks about" and "prowls" are spatial verbs — they describe a creature that moves, occupies one location at a time, and is therefore not omnipresent. Lions hunt; they do not occupy every place simultaneously. Pair this with Job 1:7 (Satan reporting his itinerary), James 4:7 ("resist the devil and he will flee" — fleeing presupposes movability), and Jeremiah 23:24 (only Yahweh "fills heaven and earth"). The doorstep insight is theological precision: Satan is real and dangerous AND a bounded creature, decisively defeated by Christ (Hebrews 2:14; Colossians 2:15). Once he is restored to creaturely scale, the reflex of attributing every honest question to satanic attack loses its theological footing — the question can be examined on its merits, the way the Bereans examined Paul's preaching (Acts 17:11). Verse 9 reinforces the bounded-creature reading: "resist him, firm in your faith". A near-divine ubiquity cannot be resisted; a creaturely adversary can.
