1 Peter 4:17
1 Peter 4:1717For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
Watchtower literature deploys ("the appointed time for the judgment to start with the house of God") within the broader "household of God" cluster (alongside , , ) as evidence that the true church is a single identifiable institutional body subject to divine inspection — namely, Jehovah's organisation. The verse is used to reinforce the reading that 's "household" must refer to one exclusive global body, the Governing Body's Warwick-headquartered organisation.
Peter's "household of God" is the same shared identity Paul speaks of across multiple local contexts — , , and here in 1 Peter — all written to different scattered congregations across Asia Minor. Peter is not writing to a single head office; he is writing to strangers "dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia" (). The "household" language describes everyone who belongs to God through Christ, not one administrative structure. Use 4:17 alongside to show that the NT's household-of-God language is always the shared identity of scattered believers, never a proof for one central organisation. The judgment starting at the house of God is a sobering word to every professing Christian — including, gently, to an organisation that claims institutional monopoly on that house.
