# 1 Peter 3:21

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Baptism, which corresponds to this, is also now saving you (not by the removing of the filth of the flesh, but by the request to God for a good conscience), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ."

## JW Usage

JWs cite this verse for baptism's significance — "baptism… is also now saving you" — and apply it to the Watchtower's two-question baptism formula in which the candidate publicly affirms identification as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in association with Jehovah's organisation. The "request to God for a good conscience" is read as the candidate's public dedication, mediated through the organisational arrangement.

## Protestant Usage

Peter defines baptism as "the request to God for a good conscience" (NWT) — "the pledge of a clear conscience toward God" (BSB) — "through the resurrection of Jesus Christ". Notice three things: the pledge is to GOD, the means is THROUGH CHRIST'S RESURRECTION, and there is no third party. Compare this with the second baptism question added by the Watchtower in 1985 — "do you understand that your dedication and baptism identify you as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in association with God's spirit-directed organisation?" (the 2019 revision dropped "spirit-directed" but kept the substance). Peter's verse contains no horizontal vow to an institution. Pair this with Romans 6:3 (baptised INTO Christ), Galatians 3:27 (have put on Christ), Acts 2:38 (baptised in the name of Jesus Christ), Acts 8:36-38 (the eunuch's single confession of faith). The doorstep insight: the apostolic pattern is a vow to Christ alone. Anything added beyond that is a different pledge.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders the Greek antitype as "which corresponds to this" — a defensible translation that captures the typology (the flood as type; baptism as antitype). The phrase "baptism… is also now saving you" preserves the apostolic claim. The verse itself is rendered without major doctrinal distortion; the issue surfaces not in the translation but in how the Watchtower's two-question formula maps onto Peter's single-pledge structure.
