# 1 Peter 3:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> in whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison

## JW Usage

Watchtower treatment of 1 Peter 3:19 ("he went and preached to the spirits in prison") minimises the verse's witness to conscious spiritual activity between death and resurrection. Soul-sleep doctrine requires the dead to be non-existent, and "spirits in prison" troubles that claim. The Watchtower's preferred reading identifies the "spirits" as the disobedient angels of Genesis 6, and the "preaching" as a declaration of judgment rather than an encounter with conscious personal beings.

## Protestant Usage

Even granting the fallen-angels reading — which is one of several credible first-century options — 1 Peter 3:19 still presupposes conscious spiritual beings capable of being preached to. Combine with Revelation 6:9-11 (souls under the altar crying "how long?"), Luke 16:22-23 (the rich man conscious after death), Luke 23:43 (the thief with Christ in Paradise "today"), Philippians 1:23 (Paul preferring "to depart and be with Christ"), and 2 Corinthians 5:8 ("absent from the body and at home with the Lord"). Every New Testament author who describes the state of the dead depicts them as conscious. No NT author ever describes the dead as non- existent awaiting reconstruction. Use 1 Peter 3:19 as a supporting voice in the intermediate-state conversation, not as a standalone proof — its value is that even the Watchtower's preferred reading requires conscious spiritual persons on the receiving end of Christ's post-cross ministry.
