JW Usage

Watchtower publications that treat generally restrict the "holy priesthood" to the 144,000 anointed Christians, in keeping with their two-tier reading of 2:9. The "spiritual sacrifices" are interpreted as acts of theocratic service, and the priestly identity is withheld from the great crowd whose hope is earthly rather than heavenly.

Protestant Usage

Read 2:5 as the explanatory middle between Peter's Christ-as- Stone language (2:4) and the corporate royal-priesthood climax (2:9). The grammar is corporate and continuous: "you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house for the purpose of a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." No partition is introduced — the same "you" addressed in 1:1 is the same "you" being built into the holy priesthood here. In the New Covenant the priestly function is no longer mediation (Christ's once-for- all work has finished that, , 10:10, 10:14); it is Godward worship offered by every believer through Christ alone. This is the same point is making: every Christian offers spiritual sacrifices directly to God through Jesus Christ, not through an anointed intermediary class and not through a central human organisation. Use 2:5 to answer the "if everyone is a priest, who receives the service?" objection — no one "receives" the service because the service is directed upward to God, not horizontally through a mediator.
