1 Peter 2:4
1 Peter 2:44As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight,
The 1977 Watchtower article "Who Is the Rock-Mass?" appeals to to argue from the apostle Peter's own pen that the rock of is Christ, not Peter himself. The article uses the verse well at that level — Peter calls Christ "the living Stone" and believers "living stones" built up on him. The verse is not, however, pressed further in Watchtower literature to ask whether Peter's Christ-centred construction metaphor rules out any continuing channel of unique authority that later institutions claim for themselves.
Grant the Watchtower's own reading of verse 4 — on this one point the 1977 "Rock-Mass" article and Reformed exegesis converge. Christ is the living Stone, believers are living stones being built up, and the foundation is Christ (). Then push the implication the Watchtower does not. If Peter's own self-understanding is "I am a living stone being built up on the Stone who is Christ," Peter is not claiming to be either a foundation or a unique successor channel. Combine with (where the binding-and-loosing authority of is re-given to the gathered disciples plurally) and (the foundation is the apostles plural, laid once). The question to the Witness is gentle: if even Peter reads himself as a living stone rather than as the rock, on what text does the Governing Body's claim to be the modern "channel" of stand? Plant the seed and let it sit.
