# 1 Peter 1:5

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "who are being safeguarded by God's power through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last period of time"
- NWT (2013 revision): "who are being safeguarded by God's power through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last period of time"

## JW Usage

The Watchtower reads 1 Peter 1:5 as describing Jehovah's protective care over those who endure faithfully. The agent — God — guards believers, but their endurance through field service, meetings, and loyalty to the Governing Body is the qualifying condition for receiving the salvation that is "ready to be revealed." On the JW reading, the guarding and the enduring run in parallel, with both required for the final outcome.

## Protestant Usage

Peter writes that believers are "shielded by God's power through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed." The active verb is God's — phrouroumenous, "being garrisoned" or "kept under guard" — and the believer is the object of the guarding, not its co-agent. The same monergistic pattern runs through Galatians 3:1-5 (the Spirit who started finishes), Philippians 1:6 (he who began will carry on to completion), and Titus 3:5 (saved by his mercy through the washing of new birth). True endurance is the fruit of God's keeping work, not the fee the believer pays to keep being kept. The Watchtower's "Spirit helps but publisher endures" framing inverts Peter's grammar — endurance is what God produces in those he is shielding.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders en kairō eschatō as "in the last period of time" — a slightly periphrastic expansion of the simple Greek "in the last time" (consensus translations: ESV "in the last time", NASB "in the last time", NIV "in the last time"). The shift is mild and not directly doctrinally loaded; it does spread the eschatological reference out somewhat, fitting JW expectations of a sustained last-days period rather than a sharp imminence. The verse itself is not the load-bearing problem for the Watchtower's reading — the issue is which agent is doing the work, and the Greek phrouroumenous gives the answer.
