# 1 Peter 1:12

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "It was revealed to them that they were ministering, not to themselves, but to you, regarding what has now been announced to you by those who declared the good news to you with holy spirit sent from heaven. Into these very things, angels are desiring to peer."

## JW Usage

Witnesses sometimes apply this verse to the 144,000 anointed class — the heavenly hope into which angels desire to peer is read as the privilege of the small heavenly remnant, distinct from the earthly hope of the great crowd. The "things now announced" are framed as the Kingdom message administered through Jehovah's organisation.

## Protestant Usage

Peter is writing to all his Christian readers — exiles of the diaspora, every believer in Christ. The "you" who heard the good news preached and into whose salvation angels long to look is the whole church. That is doctrinally decisive against the two-class hope. Pair this verse with Numbers 6:24-26 (the Aaronic blessing pronounced over every Israelite — Yahweh's face shining on the whole covenant people), 2 Corinthians 3:18 ("we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord"), and 1 John 3:2 ("we will see him as he is"). At the doorstep, ask: if even the angels long to peer into what has been announced to "you," who is the "you"? If it is only the 144,000, then the verse implies angels have no interest in the great crowd's salvation — which would be a strange thing to say. Far simpler and truer to the text: there is one inheritance, one hope, and every believer in Christ is the "you" Peter addresses — including the believer whose privilege exceeds even angelic privilege.
