1 John 5:21

NT Letters
1 John 5:21
21Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Read in NWT ↗
JW Usage

Reasoning From the Scriptures (pp. 183-187) enlists ("little children, guard yourselves from idols") in its case against any form of religious imagery — crosses on walls, nativity scenes, paintings of Jesus, stained glass. The verse is treated as a blanket New-Covenant confirmation that making or displaying a religious image is itself idolatry, without examining how the verse distinguishes (or does not distinguish) between representation and worship.

Protestant Usage

Grant that John's warning is real — idolatry is serious, and is not a throwaway line. Then anchor it to the same principle the Old Testament teaches. The bronze serpent Moses made at Jehovah's direct command () was destroyed in — but not for being an image. The Watchtower's own Insight on the Scriptures ("Copper Serpent") says Hezekiah acted "because the people had made an idol of it." Same object, righteous for seven centuries, destroyed only when worshipped. draws the same line: the sin named is idol-making in the cultic sense — giving devotional honour to something other than God — not artistic representation per se. The Watchtower itself illustrates Jesus on virtually every page of its publications; by its own operating principle, those illustrations are teaching aids, not cultic objects. The same principle accommodates a Protestant cross on a wall that nobody burns incense to.
