# 1 John 5:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> We know that we are of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.

## JW Usage

1 John 5:19 ("the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one") is a foundational proof-text for the Watchtower's cosmic-neutrality doctrine. Because the present world system is under Satan's sway, Christians must "be no part of the world" — and the organisation extends this into a blanket prohibition on voting, jury service, running for office, signing petitions, saluting the flag, and singing national anthems. The verse is used to justify civic withdrawal rather than civic engagement.

## Protestant Usage

Grant the verse's diagnosis — John is not wrong that the fallen world system is under the wicked one's sway. Then place it alongside 1 Timothy 2:1-2, written to the same generation: Paul commands the church to offer "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for all sorts of men, for kings and all those who are in high positions, in order that we may go on leading a calm and quiet life." Paul commands the church to pray *for* the Roman emperor — Nero, who would later execute him — so that civic justice and peace might be done. Use 5:19 to acknowledge the world's fallenness and Paul's civic intercession command to close the gap: Christians cannot coherently pray for civic outcomes they also refuse to participate in. The cosmic-neutrality doctrine turns 5:19 into a withdrawal command; Paul's correlative 1 Timothy 2:1-2 makes it instead a serious-engagement command under right ordering. Frame the Selma test gently: the doctrine that kept Witnesses out of Vietnam is the same doctrine that would have kept them off the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Which fruit is that?
