# 1 John 5:13

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "I write you these things so that you may know you have everlasting life, you who exercise faith in the name of the Son of God."
- NWT (2013 revision): "I write you these things so that you may know that you have life everlasting, you who put your faith in the name of the Son of God."

## JW Usage

This verse is quietly ignored in JW practice because no faithful Witness is allowed to claim it for themselves. Watchtower theology teaches that no one can be certain of salvation until they have proved faithful to the end — through field service, meeting attendance, and unbroken loyalty to the organisation. To say "I know I have eternal life" is treated as presumption. The 144,000 anointed have a stronger claim, but the millions of "other sheep" are taught to live with calibrated hope, not assurance. Most JWs asked "Do you know you have eternal life right now?" will say no.

## Protestant Usage

The verse is one of the most pastorally devastating texts in the JW conversation precisely because it sits in the NWT in plain English: "I write you these things that you may know that you have life everlasting, you who put your faith in the name of the Son of God." Three details cut deep. First, "know" (eidēte) — perfect subjunctive, certainty as a present possession, not "hope" or "work toward." Second, "have life everlasting" — present indicative possession, not future verdict. Third, the condition is faith in the name of the Son of God, not membership in the anointed class. John writes these things precisely so the reader can know — to teach the JW system, which insists that knowing is impossible, is to teach the reader something John forbids. Read alongside John 5:24 ("has passed over from death to life"), Romans 8:1 ("no condemnation"), Romans 8:38-39, and John 19:30 ("It is finished"), the verse reframes salvation from performance to gift.

## NWT Issue

Mild pattern divergence. NWT 2013 renders *tois pisteuousin eis to onoma* as "you who put your faith in the name" rather than "you who believe in the name." The 1984 NWT used "exercising faith" — the fuller form of the pattern — and 2013 softened to "put your faith," which still nudges the stative verb (*pisteuō*) toward an ongoing-commitment reading. The argument's force rests on "know you have life everlasting" (which both NWT editions preserve), so this is not load-bearing — but the shift from "believe" to "put your faith" is part of the broader NWT pattern that recasts New Testament faith as ongoing-effort rather than stative trust.
