# 1 John 4:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "You originate with God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in union with you is greater than the one who is in union with the world."

## JW Usage

Witnesses cite this verse for assurance against demonic and worldly opposition — Jehovah, working through holy spirit, is greater than Satan and the system of things. The verse is pastorally deployed in connection with the JW framing of Satan as active behind doubts, worldly attractions, and apostate teaching; loyalty to Jehovah's organisation is the practical expression of having "the one in union with you" who is greater.

## Protestant Usage

The verse is a foundation stone of Christian assurance. The One who indwells the believer is greater than the adversary at large in the world — not as a near-equal contest but as Creator over creature. Pair this with John 14:16-17 ("he will be with you forever"), Romans 8:31 ("if God is for us, who can be against us?"), and Hebrews 2:14-15 / Colossians 2:15 (Christ has already decisively defeated the powers). At the doorstep, this verse recalibrates the asymmetry many Witnesses live with — Satan treated as functionally everywhere, the Spirit treated as a flow that operates in clean conditions. Scripture has it the other way round. Satan is a localised creature who roves about (Job 1:7), prowls (1 Peter 5:8), can be resisted and will flee (James 4:7). The Spirit who indwells is the Spirit of the omnipresent God. If he is in you, you do not need to live afraid of an adversary scripture treats as already defeated.

## NWT Issue

The NWT inserts "in union with" into the verse twice, producing "the one who is in union with you is greater than the one who is in union with the world." Standard English translations render the Greek simply "he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." The "in union with" expansion is a recurring NWT pattern across passages where the apostolic literature speaks of Christ or the Spirit indwelling the believer; the change shifts the picture from indwelling presence to mere associational alignment. Personal indwelling becomes positional union, and the verse's force as a statement of the Spirit's interior presence is softened.
