1 John 4:18

NT Letters
1 John 4:18
18There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love.

JW Usage

JWs may cite "perfect love throws fear outside" in principle, but the organisational reality often contradicts it. The fear of losing family, friends, and community through disfellowshipping — or being labelled an apostate — creates a fear-based compliance that prevents honest questioning. Members who harbour doubts frequently remain silent not because their doubts are resolved but because the cost of voicing them is too high.

Protestant Usage

John writes that "perfect love throws fear outside, because fear restrains" (). The historic peace churches — Mennonites, Quakers, Church of the Brethren — demonstrate what voluntary conviction looks like in practice. They have maintained pacifist witness for over four centuries, longer than Jehovah's Witnesses have existed, without shunning members who change their minds. A young Mennonite who joins the military disappoints her family but still comes home for dinner — no judicial committee, no shunning, no erasure. The same peace witness, held without coercion. The question raises is whether the pacifism God commends is the kind chosen freely out of love or the kind held in place by fear of losing one's family. A faith maintained by threat of social annihilation is not the faith John describes — it is the fear he says love casts out.
