1 John 4:1

NT Letters
1 John 4:1
1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

JW Usage

JWs accept the principle of "testing the spirits" but apply it exclusively outward — to other religions and to "apostates." Within the organisation, questioning the Governing Body's teaching is treated as disloyalty. The Watchtower's claim to be God's sole channel of communication is functionally unfalsifiable: no conceivable evidence could disprove the 1919 inspection because the claim rests on an invisible event witnessed by no one.

Protestant Usage

First commands believers to "test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God." The test is not subjective certainty ("I feel this is the truth") but an objective standard: Scripture. warns that the heart is deceitful — every sincere religious person feels certain, so subjective certainty cannot adjudicate between contradictory truth claims. praises the Bereans for testing an apostle's teaching against Scripture, and Paul accepted the test without rebuke. gives a concrete test for prophets: if a prediction fails, the prophet did not speak for God. The Bible never asks anyone to accept an invisible, untestable claim on the say-so of the claimant. If no conceivable evidence could disprove the 1919 inspection claim, it is not a testable truth claim — it is an assertion that demands acceptance on the organisation's own authority alone.
