# 1 John 2:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

## JW Usage

John's line — "if anyone does commit a sin, we have a helper with the Father, Jesus Christ, a righteous one" — is affirmed in Watchtower literature as a description of Jesus's advocacy role. What is missing from the standard Watchtower treatment is the tension this verse creates with the organisation's published mediator-restriction doctrine. Since 1979 the Watchtower has taught that Jesus is mediator "only for anointed Christians" (15 April 1979, p. 31) and "is not the Mediator between Jehovah God and all mankind" (Worldwide Security Under the Prince of Peace, 1986, pp. 10-11). The rank-and-file JW told to hope in Jesus as their parakletos at 1 John 2:1 has rarely been told that their official theology denies them access to him in that role.

## Protestant Usage

Pair 2:1 with 2:2: "He is a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins, yet not for ours only but also for those of the whole world" (NWT). John's "we" in 2:1 is the same "we" as in 1:3, 1:6, 1:8, 2:3, and the "beloved ones" address in 2:7 — the whole reading congregation. The "helper" (parakletos) he names is not restricted to an anointed class. Combine with 1 Timothy 2:5-6 ("one mediator between God and men ... who gave himself a corresponding ransom for all") and Hebrews 9:15 ("Christ ... is mediator of a new covenant, in order that ... those who have been called may receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance"). Ask the Witness the simple question: is Jesus your helper, advocate, and mediator? Then open the 1979 Watchtower and the 2010 God's Word For Us Through Jeremiah (p. 173) alongside the text. The gap between 1 John 2:1-2 and the published mediator-restriction doctrine is where the seed of direct-access theology can land. Keep the tone pastoral — this is often genuinely new information to the JW at the door.
