1 Corinthians 9:26

NT Letters
1 Corinthians 9:26
26Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight like I am beating the air.
Read in NWT ↗
JW Usage

JWs read 9:26 as confirming the seriousness of Christian commitment — Paul is a focused runner and a focused fighter. The verse blends smoothly with the Watchtower's emphasis on purposeful activity in the organisation (door-to-door service, meeting attendance, moral conduct) as the concrete form Paul's running takes in the modern era. The verse is cited to keep Witnesses on mission and to reinforce the intensity expected by the organisation.

Protestant Usage

9:26 is Paul's picture of disciplined Christian life — not aimlessly, not flailing. But the disciplined running is the OUTWORKING of the salvation, not the purchase of it. Paul's "fighting" is self-discipline (v.27: "I buffet my body") toward faithful ministry, not anxiety about his final standing. At the door, 9:26 helps the assurance argument rather than undermining it: "Paul runs with direction because he already knows where he is going. He is not running hoping the finish line exists. He fights with aim because his Saviour is at the end of the track. The JW reading inverts that — runs because the finish line is in doubt."
