# 1 Corinthians 9:24

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize.

## JW Usage

JW treatment of 9:24 emphasises the conditional framing: "run so as to take the prize" is read as confirming that final survival of Armageddon and eternal life in the new world depend on running well — maintaining loyalty, publisher activity, moral conduct, and doctrinal submission. The prize is the outcome you might or might not obtain; the running is the work that qualifies you. Paul's athletic intensity is naturalised as the normal Witness posture of working toward an as-yet-uncertain final acceptance.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's athletic metaphor in 9:24 is Christian discipleship under metaphor, not a works-salvation schema. He is not writing "do this to earn the prize"; he is writing to exhort the Corinthians toward the intensity of a committed runner. The prize (eternal life) is the gift God gives to those united to Christ; the running is the disciplined life that flows from that union. Read alongside 2 Corinthians 13:5, where Paul's own "disqualified" language is the evidential test of whether Christ is in you, not a threat of losing a salvation you possess. At the door: "A runner runs because she is in the race, not to create the race. Paul's intensity is the right intensity of a saved person, not the anxious striving of someone hoping God will accept her."
