# 1 Corinthians 8:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> So about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.

## JW Usage

JWs cite the broader 1 Corinthians 8 context to argue that Christians must avoid anything with pagan historical associations — holidays, birthday celebrations, the cross symbol, toasting at meals. The verse itself says "an idol is nothing," but the organisation reads the chapter's conscience-sensitive conclusion (vv. 9-13) as requiring total abstention from any cultural practice with pagan origins, however remote.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's starting point is decisive: "we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one" (1 Corinthians 8:4). The idol has no real power; the pagan association is emptied of meaning for the informed Christian. Paul's concern in verses 9-13 is for the weak conscience of a specific brother in a specific context (eating meat in an idol's temple), not for imposing a universal ban on all cultural practices that once had pagan connections. Romans 14:5-6 confirms the principle: "one person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike — let each one be fully convinced in his own mind." John 10:22 records Jesus himself attending the Festival of Dedication (Hanukkah) — a post-biblical feast with no direct divine command, originating in the Maccabean period. If Jesus attended a festival not commanded in Torah, the Watchtower's "pagan origins" standard applies a stricter rule than Jesus himself observed.
