1 Corinthians 3:13

1 Corinthians 3:13
13his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work.

JW Usage

The Watchtower reads 3:13 as judgment of the quality of each worker's contribution within the organisation — publisher hours, elder service, missionary effort. The fire-testing is a real evaluation, and the outcome bears on one's standing for survival of Armageddon and for the post-millennial test. In effect the works are treated as the basis of the final verdict, not merely its public evidence.

Protestant Usage

3:13 describes the evaluation of a believer's WORK — specifically the contribution built on the one foundation of Christ (v.11) — not the evaluation of whether they are saved. Read verses 14-15 together: some work is rewarded, some work is burned up, but "the worker himself will be saved, even though only as through fire" (v.15). Salvation is assumed throughout. At the door: "Paul's fire is testing a believer's WORK and determining reward — not testing whether the believer is saved. If you read 3:13-15 together, salvation is not up for re-judgment — only the quality of what was built on the one foundation."
