NT Letters
1 Corinthians 3:11
11For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

JW Usage

The Watchtower agrees that Christ is the foundation of the church, and cites 3:11 against Catholic claims for Petrine succession. The verse is pulled in for polemical use against other Christian traditions. What is less clearly engaged is the implication for the Watchtower's own "channel of communication" claim: if Christ is the sole foundation, and the apostles and prophets are the completed superstructure-foundation (), there is no room for an additional modern foundation or channel on top.

Protestant Usage

3:11 stands alongside as the answer to EVERY claim of a unique modern authority-channel — Catholic or Watchtower. The foundation is Christ; it was laid once; nothing else can be the foundation. At the door, pair with (Peter himself calls Christ the Stone and believers the stones built up on him — never claiming the role for himself) and (binding-and-loosing extended to the gathered assembly, not a single body). The anti-papal and anti-Watchtower readings of 3:11 are the same reading: no institution stands between Christ and his people. At the door: "Paul says no one CAN lay another foundation. If the Watchtower's channel is an additional foundation, Paul forbids it. If it is not an additional foundation, what is it doing that Christ alone is not enough for?"
