1 Corinthians 2:10
1 Corinthians 2:1010But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
Witnesses cite this verse to affirm that Jehovah reveals deep spiritual truths to his people through holy spirit. Within Watchtower pneumatology, the spirit is treated as Jehovah's "active force" — an impersonal energy he uses — so the verb "searches" is read as Jehovah's own searching power, not the action of a distinct Person. The "deep things of God" are typically applied to truths the Governing Body discerns and communicates through the publications.
Read what the spirit DOES in this verse. He searches. He searches all things, even the deep things of God. Searching is a personal act — it requires intention, attention, and intelligence. An active force does not search; a Person does. Verse 11 makes the parallelism explicit: just as the spirit of a man knows the things of that man, the Spirit of God knows the things of God. The Spirit has a knowing relationship to the Father analogous to a human's self-awareness — that is the language of personhood, not energy. Pair this with (the Spirit teaches), (he intercedes), (he speaks and chooses), (he is grieved), and (lying to the Spirit is lying to God). The Watchtower description of the Spirit as electricity-like force cannot survive the New Testament's verbs. At the doorstep, ask gently: in your own NWT, what does the spirit do here? And can an active force search?
The NWT renders pneuma here in lowercase as "spirit" rather than "Spirit," matching the Watchtower's wider pattern of treating the Holy Spirit as an impersonal active force rather than the Third Person of the Trinity. The grammar of the verse — the spirit searches, the spirit knows — is left intact, but the lowercase rendering visually de-personalises the subject. The translation does not deny what the Spirit does in the text; it does pre-form the reader to imagine the doer as a thing.
