1 Corinthians 15:47

NT Letters
1 Corinthians 15:47
47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.

JW Usage

The JW reading treats "the second man is from heaven" as a statement about Jesus' resurrection destination (he went back to heaven) or his pre-human origin as the archangel Michael. The phrase "from heaven" is reduced to "sent from" — a mission statement, not a statement of heavenly origin or nature. This keeps the verse compatible with the Watchtower picture of Jesus as a highly exalted creature rather than a pre-existent divine person.

Protestant Usage

Paul's contrast is ontological, not merely missional. The first Adam is "of the earth, earthy" — his origin, composition, and sphere are earthly. The second Man is "of heaven" — origin, composition, and sphere are heavenly. At the door, connect it to ("no one has ascended except the one who descended from heaven") and ("I have come down from heaven"). Jesus' heavenly origin distinguishes him from the "God-sent perfect man" JW category entirely — this is pre-existent, heavenly being taking on true humanity, not an archangel given a body. Ask: "If Jesus is only a man — a second Adam with an upgrade — why does Paul say the second Man is FROM heaven, the way Adam was from the earth?"
