# 1 Corinthians 15:47

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.

## JW Usage

The JW reading treats "the second man is from heaven" as a statement about Jesus' resurrection destination (he went back to heaven) or his pre-human origin as the archangel Michael. The phrase "from heaven" is reduced to "sent from" — a mission statement, not a statement of heavenly origin or nature. This keeps the verse compatible with the Watchtower picture of Jesus as a highly exalted creature rather than a pre-existent divine person.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's contrast is ontological, not merely missional. The first Adam is "of the earth, earthy" — his origin, composition, and sphere are earthly. The second Man is "of heaven" — origin, composition, and sphere are heavenly. At the door, connect it to John 3:13 ("no one has ascended except the one who descended from heaven") and John 6:38 ("I have come down from heaven"). Jesus' heavenly origin distinguishes him from the "God-sent perfect man" JW category entirely — this is pre-existent, heavenly being taking on true humanity, not an archangel given a body. Ask: "If Jesus is only a man — a second Adam with an upgrade — why does Paul say the second Man is FROM heaven, the way Adam was from the earth?"
