# 1 Corinthians 13:12

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower sometimes engages 13:12 at the level of eschatological prospect — "face to face" is read as the future state in paradise, when everything will be clear. In that form the verse is uncontroversial. What is not engaged is the implication for the present: if Paul still sees "through a glass darkly," the Watchtower's presentation of itself as Jehovah's unfailing channel of truth has to do the harder work of explaining how present-tense organisational certainty can outpace the apostle's own confession.

## Protestant Usage

13:12 is the visible dividing line between "already" and "not yet." Paul — writing AFTER Pentecost, in the new-covenant age — describes his own knowledge as "through a glass darkly." The face-to-face vision is future. Any group claiming present-tense final clarity is claiming what Paul did not. At the door, pair 13:12 with Hebrews 8:11 (which cites Jeremiah 31:34 as in force): the new covenant IS in effect (Hebrews 8) AND yet knowledge is still partial (1 Corinthians 13). Both are true. We live in the in-between. The Watchtower collapses this tension — deferring Jeremiah 31:34 to the millennial future while claiming Jeremiah-31-level clarity through the Governing Body in the present. Paul's confession at 13:12 is the simple test that breaks that collapse.
