# 1 Corinthians 12:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.

## JW Usage

The NWT renders 12:11 using the neuter pronoun "it" for the Spirit: the Spirit distributes gifts "just as it wills." JW theology treats the Holy Spirit as God's active force — an impersonal power, not a person. The Greek verb bouletai ("wills") is acknowledged as attributing volition, but this is treated as personification of an impersonal force rather than literal personal agency. The verse is not usually engaged at the door as a deity-of-the-Spirit text.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek verb is βούλεται (bouletai) — "wills" — a defining attribute of personhood. Every major English translation except the NWT uses "he wills." At the door the argument is simple: an impersonal force does not HAVE a will; the NWT's own text undermines its theology at this point. Pair with Acts 5:3-4 (lying to the Holy Spirit IS lying to God), Acts 13:2 (the Spirit says "separate Barnabas and Saul for ME"), Ephesians 4:30 (you can GRIEVE the Spirit — only persons can be grieved), and Romans 8:27 (the Spirit has a mind — phronēma). The cumulative weight of personal attributes in doctrinal prose is decisive: the Spirit is a person distinct from both the believer and the Father.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders *kathōs bouletai* ("as he wills") as "as it wills," using the neuter pronoun to depersonalise the Spirit. Every major English translation uses "he wills." The Greek grammar is decisive — *bouletai* is a third-person singular verb ascribing personal volition. The NWT translates grammar rigidly only where it supports the Watchtower's "active force" pneumatology; elsewhere neuter-gendered Greek is routinely rendered with personal English. The effect at 12:11 is to make Paul's sentence contradict the larger JW theology it is used to support — an impersonal force cannot have a will, but Paul's verb requires one.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Lying to the Spirit Is Lying to God](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/acts5-spirit-is-god.md) — Acts 5:3-4 [Holy Spirit]
- [Sin Doesn't Block the Spirit from the Household — The Seal That Stays](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/sin-blocks-holy-spirit-household.md) — Ephesians 1:13-14 — Sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise [Holy Spirit]
