# 1 Corinthians 10:13

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "No temptation has come upon you except what is common to men. But God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but along with the temptation he will also make the way out so that you may be able to endure it."

## JW Usage

Witnesses read this verse as a promise that Jehovah will help loyal ones endure trials, especially temptations to immorality, apostasy, or compromise with the world. The "way out" is typically framed as Jehovah's organisation, the elders, the publications, and the strength of the congregation. A brother fighting a serious sin is encouraged to approach the elders, where the "way out" is administered through the judicial pathway — confession, evaluation, and discipline aimed at cleansing the congregation.

## Protestant Usage

Read what the text actually promises — God provides the way of escape for the tempted believer. The architecture is rescue, not removal. When a brother is fighting pornography or any besetting sin, the New Testament response is mutual confession (James 5:16), restoration in gentleness (Galatians 6:1), and bold approach to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). At the doorstep, ask: in your congregation, when a brother walks into the back room with the elders to confess he is losing the fight, does he walk out into rescue, or into reproof? The promise of 1 Corinthians 10:13 is that God's faithfulness — not the judicial committee — supplies the escape. Pair with Romans 7:15-25 (Paul's own struggle) and Romans 8:1 ("no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"). The man fighting and losing is in Paul's category, not on a charge sheet.
