1 Corinthians 1:8

NT Letters
1 Corinthians 1:8
8He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

JW Usage

The Watchtower reads 1:8 within its framework of perseverance- dependent salvation. The "sustaining to the end" is treated as a conditional outcome for those who continue in faithful service — Jehovah will sustain those who remain faithful through the organisation. The subject of sustaining ("he") is acknowledged as God, but the condition (ongoing obedience to the faithful and discreet slave) is quietly read back into the verse so the sustaining becomes contingent on the believer's persistence rather than grounded in God's preserving action.

Protestant Usage

Paul's grammar is simple: GOD is the subject of "will sustain." The confidence for the "day of our Lord Jesus Christ" rests on God's keeping action, not on the believer's endurance as a prior condition. Read alongside (Paul's own discipline) and ("he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ"), the two halves of the Christian life are held together: God's faithfulness to preserve, the believer's faithfulness to persevere — the second flowing from the first. At the door: "Paul fears 'disqualification' at 9:27 and trusts 'sustaining to the end' at 1:8. That is not contradiction — that is how a saved person lives: disciplined because preserved, not disciplined to get preserved."
