# Win the Person, Not the Argument

The doorstep posture that decides whether a JW will hear a single thing you say. JWs are trained to expect mockery, hostility, or dismissal. They are not the enemy — the high-control system is. If you treat them as opponents in a debate, every defensive instinct the Watchtower has cultivated activates and shuts the conversation down. If you treat them as a person, listen to them, ask what THEY believe (not what the official literature teaches), and assume the posture of a fellow Bible-reader rather than a teacher, you create the only condition under which apologetics actually works: the person allows themselves to think. Let them think they are teaching you. Lead by asking questions, not by lecturing. Be the person who answers the door, not the person who hides.

## Recognition Signals

- "we'd like to share a Bible message with you"
- "we're not selling anything"
- "I'd like to read a scripture with you"
- "would you say Bible reading is important?"
- "do you think things are getting better or worse in the world?"
- "do you have any Bible questions?"

## Opening Question

> "Thank you for coming to my door — I genuinely appreciate that. Before we read anything, can I ask: as a Jehovah's Witness, what do YOU personally believe? Not what the literature says — what do you actually believe is true?"

## Expected JW Responses

### Response 1

**JW says:** "We believe the Bible — what does the literature say differently?"

**Observation:** Affirm the desire to follow the Bible. The follow-up move is to ask them to define ONE belief in their own words — not from a pamphlet — about who Jesus is. The Watchtower's training relies on canned answers; an honest first-person answer slows them down enough to think.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We're here to teach you, not to be taught."

**Observation:** Let them. Their training expects to lead. The most subversive move is to let them think they are teaching while you ask questions that quietly upend the framework. Columbo posture — "help me understand this one thing…" — is more powerful at the door than full-volume contradiction.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Would you like to study the Bible with us?"

**Observation:** A polite "I'd love to talk about Jesus right now — I have ten minutes" reframes the encounter from open-ended Watchtower study to one focused doorstep moment. Don't accept a study unless you are committed to a long pastoral engagement. Most Christians do not have time or training for that — be honest about it.

## Follow-Up

Once you have the JW's posture down from "field service mode" to "actual conversation," deploy ONE focused argument — never three. Pick from theological-triage-jw-doorstep + your strongest deity argument. End with the gospel — even if the apologetic argument is unfinished. The point is not to "win" today; the point is to plant one thing that they cannot un-think after they walk away.
