# What Happens When You Die?

JWs open with mortality, paradise earth, and the hope of living forever in a restored garden. This is one of their most rehearsed presentations. The key is to redirect from the destination to the person of Jesus — who decides your eternal destiny?

## Recognition Signals

- "soul"
- "hell"
- "paradise earth"
- "resurrection hope"
- "what happens when you die"
- "the dead know nothing"
- "Ecclesiastes 9:5"
- "no hell"
- "live forever on earth"

## Opening Question

> "That's a really important question. Can I ask you — what did Jesus himself say happens after death? Because in Luke 23:43 he told the thief on the cross "today you will be with me in paradise." That sounds like immediate conscious existence, not soul sleep. What do you make of that?"

## Expected JW Responses

### Response 1

**JW says:** "The comma should be placed after 'today' — Jesus was saying 'I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise.'"

**Observation:** This is a standard Watchtower reinterpretation. But "truly I tell you" (amen lego soi) is always followed by the statement — Jesus never says "I tell you today" anywhere else in the Gospels. The "today" belongs with "paradise," not with "I tell you."

### Response 2

**JW says:** "The dead are conscious of nothing — Ecclesiastes 9:5."

**Observation:** Ecclesiastes is written from an "under the sun" perspective (human observation). Jesus, who came from heaven, reveals what actually happens. Paul says "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8).

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Paradise will be on earth, not in heaven."

**Observation:** Redirect: "Whether paradise is on earth or in heaven, the question is who gets to be there. Jesus says you must be born again to see God's kingdom (John 3:3). Have you been born again?"

## Follow-Up

The real question isn't just what happens after death — it's who decides. Jesus said "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25). He didn't say "Jehovah is the resurrection and I'm the middleman." If Jesus holds the keys to life and death, doesn't that tell you something about who he is?
