# Warm Handoff to a Local Pastor — After the Light-Bulb Moment

When a JW receives the gospel in a doorstep encounter, the next 24 to 72 hours are the most fragile of their entire spiritual journey. Without a warm handoff to a local Christian pastor or church, the JW is statistically very likely to be re-pulled by their study leader, pioneer, or elders within a week. The 'light-bulb moment' is necessary but not sufficient — what follows determines whether it produces a disciple or a temporarily moved heart that gets reabsorbed. This playbook describes how to make the handoff before the encounter ends.

## Recognition Signals

- "where should I go to church"
- "which church should I attend"
- "I want to leave the JWs"
- "I want to find a real church"
- "what do I do now"
- "who can help me"
- "I have nowhere to go"
- "all my friends are JWs"

## Opening Question

> "Now that you are open to this, can I do one more thing for you? I'd like to introduce you to a pastor I know personally in your area — not a stranger from a website, not someone who will lecture you, just a kind man who has walked with other people coming out of the Watchtower and who is genuinely warm. You may have been told that Christians outside the JWs are angry or hostile — he is not that. He won't pressure you, he won't ambush you with a sermon, he'll just meet you for coffee or a phone call whenever you're ready. Would that be okay?"

## Expected JW Responses

### Response 1

**JW says:** "I don't know any other Christians."

**Observation:** This is the most common and the most pastorally important response. JWs are taught from childhood that 'worldly' Christians are spiritually dead — many have never had a serious conversation with a non-JW Christian in their entire lives. Affirm honestly: 'That's normal in your community, and it's not your fault. The organisation discourages friendships outside. That's why I want to introduce you to one specific person — not a stranger from a website, but a pastor I personally trust. He has helped other ex-JWs and he understands the journey. Would you let me make that introduction now?'

### Response 2

**JW says:** "What if my family / friends find out I'm talking to another church?"

**Observation:** Take this seriously. Disfellowshipping fear is real and the consequences are real. Say: 'I understand. We can do this gently — you don't have to tell anyone yet. The pastor can meet you in a coffee shop, or just call you. Nothing public until you decide. The JW elders will not find out from me, and the pastor I'm thinking of has helped other people in your exact situation — he knows how to be discreet.'

### Response 3

**JW says:** "I'll just go online and find one."

**Observation:** Don't accept this. Ungoverned online church-shopping is one of the worst things that can happen to a fragile new convert. They will likely land on a Watchtower-friendly resource, an Arminian-Pelagian word-of-faith stream, or a YouTube apologist with no pastoral oversight. Say: 'You can do that too — but please let me give you one trusted name first. I'd rather you have ONE good person in real life than a hundred YouTube pastors. May I send you the contact details right now?'

### Response 4

**JW says:** "I'm not ready to commit to a church yet."

**Observation:** Affirm — and adjust the offer downward. Say: 'You don't have to commit to anything today. The first step isn't joining a church, it's having one Christian phone number you can call when you have a question or when things get hard. Let me give you that one phone number. You don't have to use it — but please have it.'

### Response 5

**JW says:** "What if the pastor turns out to be a hypocrite or weird?"

**Observation:** Honest and fair. Say: 'You're right to be cautious — there are bad pastors. The reason I'm recommending this specific person is that I know him personally and I have seen him handle ex-JW care well. If he turns out to be wrong, you can walk away — there is no shunning in Christianity for leaving a church. That's actually one of the differences. Will you give him one meeting?'

## Follow-Up

## PREPARATION (do this BEFORE you ever go out evangelising)

Don't wait for the moment of encounter to start scrambling. The
difference between a successful handoff and a lost one is preparation
done weeks earlier.

1. **Pre-identify a pastor or church** near where you typically
evangelise. Have a name, phone number, address, and service
   times ready in your phone.
2. **Have a 30-second conversation with the pastor in advance.**
'I do street evangelism in your area — can I send people who
become interested to you?' This saves enormous trouble later.
3. **The church should be one with experience caring for ex-JWs.**
Not every faithful church knows how. Ideally one with a former
JW on staff or in the congregation.
4. **Print physical church cards.** A business card or printed slip
with the church name, address, service times, and pastor's
direct number. Phone screenshots get lost. Physical objects get
   pocketed.
5. **Pray for the pastor** before the season starts. Ask God for
a long, fruitful relationship with him for the JWs you will
   send his way.

## AT THE DOOR (what the handoff itself looks like, in order of strength)

1. **Best — live phone handoff.** Call the pastor live, in front
of the JW, and pass the phone. The JW hears the pastor's voice
and the pastor knows they're coming. This is the gold standard.
2. **Second — text in front of them.** Text the pastor in front
of the JW with the JW's name and contact details. Show the JW
   you've sent it.
3. **Third — promise + same-day text.** Hand the JW the church
card and say, 'I'm going to text the pastor tonight to let him
know your name. He'll be expecting your call.' Then actually
   do it that night.
4. **Worst (but better than nothing) — just the card.** A physical
card with one specific name and number is still vastly better
than 'find a Bible-believing church near you.'

**What NOT to do:**
- **Don't make the church recommendation generic.** 'Find a Bible-
believing church near you' is useless. Be specific: this church,
  this pastor, this phone number.
- **Don't recommend a church you haven't personally vetted.** A
bad first church experience for an ex-JW can set them back years.
- **Don't promise the pastor will be perfect.** They won't be.
Coach the JW honestly: 'He's a normal person who will make
mistakes — but he loves Jesus and he'll walk with you.'
- **Don't try to disciple them yourself if you cannot follow up.**
A street evangelist who plants the gospel and disappears is
better than a street evangelist who plants the gospel and
  promises follow-up they cannot deliver.

**The 72-hour follow-up:**
- Day 1 (same day): Text the JW a single short message — 'It was
great meeting you today. I'm praying for you. Here's the pastor's
  number again: [number].' Nothing more.
- Day 2: Text or call the pastor: 'Did [name] reach out yet?'
- Day 3: If the JW hasn't connected with the pastor yet, send one
more short text: 'Just thinking about you. Don't feel any
pressure — but the offer to meet [pastor] is still open whenever
  you're ready.'
- After day 3: Do not chase. Pray. Let God work.

**The longer-term care framework:**
Once the JW has connected with the local pastor, your role shifts
from evangelist to friend-on-the-edge. You stay in light contact,
you check in occasionally, and you let the local church do the
discipleship work. Don't try to be both the gospel-planter and the
long-term discipler unless you live in the same city and are part
of the same church. Specialise.
