# The Key in Your Pocket — A Christ-Centred Reading of Scripture

Many JWs read the Bible their whole lives without seeing Christ as the unifying centre. The Watchtower's reading method emphasises types, prophetic chronology, and organisational continuity — but rarely unfolds the OT as anticipation of the Messiah. The Emmaus Hermeneutic is Jesus' own approach: open the Old Testament and show how Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms all spoke of Him (Luke 24:27, 24:32, 24:44). For ex-JWs and JWs in early conversation, this is often the moment when the whole Bible suddenly cohers — "didn't our hearts burn?" Use this playbook when a JW shows signs of openness to Scripture but is filtering everything through the Watchtower's interpretive grid.

## Recognition Signals

- "Jehovah's purpose is the kingdom"
- "the Bible is about God's name"
- "everything points to the kingdom government"
- "the master worker"
- "we don't focus on Jesus, we focus on Jehovah's purpose"
- "I haven't been shown that"

## Opening Question

> "Have you ever read Luke 24, the Emmaus road story? Two disciples are walking, devastated because — in their words — "we were hoping that this man was the one to redeem Israel." Jesus comes alongside, and starting from MOSES and ALL THE PROPHETS, he opens the Scriptures and shows them how it has all been about Him. They later said, "didn't our hearts burn within us?" Has anyone ever read the Old Testament with you that way?"

## Expected JW Responses

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Yes — the Bible is unified around Jehovah's kingdom purpose."

**Observation:** Affirm the kingdom purpose, then redirect: but Jesus says the KEY is His own person. Luke 24:44 — "all the things written about ME in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and Psalms must be fulfilled." Not "about the kingdom" — about Him. The kingdom-centred Watchtower reading misses what Jesus said the reading was about.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We focus on accurate knowledge — types, prophecies, dates."

**Observation:** Accurate knowledge is good, but Christ said the disciples had "accurate" knowledge in a sense and were still "foolish and slow of heart" (Luke 24:25) until they saw HIM in the texts. The Watchtower's emphasis on dates (1914, 1919, 1935, 1975) and chronology has produced a reading where Christ is rarely the centre of an OT passage. That is the very thing Luke 24 diagnoses as a defective reading.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "I haven't really been shown that approach."

**Observation:** That answer is gold. Don't push hard. Offer to read one passage with them — Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Zechariah 12, or Isaiah 6 with John 12:41 — slowly, with the apostolic NT lens. The goal is "burning hearts" not winning the round.

## Follow-Up

Walk through one OT-NT pair from the JW's own NWT cross-references. John 12:41 → Isaiah 6:1-5 is the cleanest first move (Isaiah saw whose glory? — Jesus'). Zechariah 12:10 → John 19:37 is a cumulatively shocking second move (when was Jehovah pierced?). Then say plainly: "There is a hermeneutic — a reading key — that unlocks the whole Bible. Jesus gave it on the Emmaus road. Without it, you will read your whole life and never see Him. With it, every page makes sense. The Watchtower has not given you that key. I'd like to."
