Only 144,000 Go to Heaven — The Rest Live on Earth
Watchtower Teaching
JWs teach that God has two separate classes of saved people with two different destinies: exactly 144,000 'anointed' Christians who will reign with Christ in heaven, and an unlimited 'great crowd' who will live forever on a paradise earth. Only the anointed partake of communion, are 'born again,' or are adopted as God's children. This two-tier system has no precedent in first-century Christianity and creates a spiritual hierarchy absent from the New Testament.
Why This Matters
If only 144,000 are born again, then most JWs are excluded from the new covenant (), are not God's children (), and have no mediator — the Watchtower explicitly teaches that Jesus mediates only for the anointed. Yet says there is 'one mediator between God and mankind.' places the 'great crowd' before the throne and in God's temple (naos) — the same location used for heavenly scenes throughout Revelation. And the 144,000 in Revelation 14 are described as male Jewish virgins from twelve literal tribes — if the number is literal, so are those qualifications.
