Responding to Jehovah's Witnesses

Jesus Is Mediator Only for the 144,000

Watchtower Teaching

JWs teach that Jesus Christ serves as mediator of the new covenant only for the 144,000 anointed class — not for the 'great crowd' of other Witnesses or for mankind in general. The great crowd receives indirect benefits of the ransom through their association with the anointed class and the Watchtower organisation. This means the vast majority of JWs (over 99.9%) do not have Jesus as their personal mediator between themselves and God. Most rank-and-file Witnesses are unaware their organisation teaches this.

Why This Matters

Paul wrote, 'There is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus' (). The Greek word for 'mankind' is anthropon — all humans, not a subset. The Watchtower's restriction of Jesus' mediation to 144,000 people effectively inserts the organisation between the great crowd and God. If Jesus does not mediate for you, who does? The Governing Body becomes the de facto mediator — a role Scripture assigns exclusively to Christ. This doctrine also undermines the JW's own prayers: they pray 'through Jesus Christ' but are told Jesus is not actually their mediator. It is one of the most theologically significant and pastorally devastating doctrines the Watchtower teaches — and one of the least known among its own members.
