Responding to Jehovah's Witnesses

Whole-Blood Transfusions Are Forbidden by God

Watchtower Teaching

JWs teach that God's command to 'abstain from blood' () forbids receiving a transfusion of whole blood. For decades the ban also covered the four primary components: the June 2000 Watchtower said "accepting whole blood or any of those four primary components violates God's law", while smaller fractions were left to conscience. That framework changed in 2026. On 20 March 2026 Governing Body Update #2 stated that "the Bible does not comment on the use of a person's own blood in medical and surgical care", leaving that decision to each Christian. On 18 September 2026 (Governing Body Update #6) the Governing Body announced that accepting red cells, white cells, plasma or platelets from another person's blood "is a matter of personal conscience", and that each Witness decides whether to donate blood "for the clearly expressed purpose of providing components or fractions." The stated reason: "Since the Bible does not comment on such decisions, they are a matter of individual conscience." What remains is the refusal of whole-blood transfusions, which jw.org says "is unchanged", together with donating blood for use as a whole-blood transfusion. The congregation "will not get involved" in component decisions. Under the earlier policy many Witnesses, including children, refused treatments that are now a personal choice; Awake! (22 May 1994) honoured such youths as "young people who put God first."

Why This Matters

The command to 'abstain from blood' in appears alongside 'abstain from things strangled' — both refer to dietary practices, not medical procedures. Intravenous transfusion is not eating. forbids eating blood because 'the life of every creature is its blood' — the principle is respect for life. The September 2026 change sharpens the question rather than settling it. Whole blood is red cells, white cells, plasma and platelets; all four may now be accepted, yet whole blood may not. The line now falls between blood that has been separated and blood that has not — a medical-processing distinction that no verse mentions. And the Governing Body's own reason for the change, that the Bible does not comment on these decisions, is equally true of whole-blood transfusion, which did not exist in the first century. The policy's history (organ transplants condemned in 1967 and left to conscience by 1980; the four components forbidden for decades, then left to conscience) shows a rule set by an organisation, not by a text. A divine command does not oscillate.
